'lantern Honesty' Fred Darking Oil

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A oil on board still life by Nottingham artist Harry Fred Darking 1911-1999. The work shows a bright oil lamp on a side table with a pot of dried honesty. The work is an exercise in bright light and it''s effect. The work is mounted in the original frame, glazed by the artist to work with the painting. The work is signed Darking and dated 1949.

Fred Darking was a well known artist in Nottingham, where he trained under Arthur Spooner. Darking''s technique was to build up layers of colour and his work is bright and complex. Darking lived in Nottingham most of his life and exhibited widely there, although he did paint during the war and his work is kept at the Imperial War Museum. He was a man unconcerned by anything other than painting and did not court popularity and as such his work is vastly underrated.
