'the Blue Vase' Oil By Harry Fred Darking

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

Oil on board still life by Nottingham artist Harry Fred Darking 1911-1999. The work shows an oil lamp on a side table with vase, a pot of dried honesty and a box of matches. The lamp is turned down and the whole painting is an exercise in capturing light. The work is mounted in the original wood and card frame. The painting is signed Darking and dated 1937, it also has an exhibition label on the reverse for the Nottingham city gallery, giving the title of ''The Blue Vase''

Fred Darking was a well known artist in Nottingham, where he trained under Arthur Spooner. Darking''s technique was to build up layers of colour and his work is bright and complex. Darking lived in Nottingham most of his life and exhibited widely there, although he did paint during the war and his work is kept at the Imperial War Museum. He was a man unconcerned by anything other than painting and did not court popularity and as such his work is vastly underrated.
