Flushing Harbour Netherlands By Kenneth Holmes

A Charming oil on canvas by Kenneth Holmes. The work shows the bustling harbour of Flushing, the anglicized name for the Dutch city of Vlissingen , with a ship entering the harbour about to lower sail and also showing the busy harbour side. The work has a typical air of the forties or fifties with that rose tinted hue over the whole scene which also shows the influence of the Newlyn school. The work is in excellent untouched condition and in the original white painted frame.
 
This is an unusual work for the artist who was principly a etcher and engraver, but he did work in other mediums too and it is my opinion that this is a holiday work. Kenneth Holmes is recorded as a painter, etcher, draughtsman and engraver. He studied at Skipton School of Art 1919-21, Leeds College of Art 1921-23, Central School of Art, Chelsea School of Art and The Royal College of Art of which he later became associate, he also spent time studying in Italy (1927-28) which greatly effected his engravings.
