Large Oil Painting of a seated gentleman, by the Hon. John Collier, signed and dated 1913.

Approx 36 x 28 inches

Overall in excellent condition, with only two notable very small paint losses to the top edge of the canvas and the bottom edge, as seen in photographs.

John Collier OBE RP ROI 1850–1934 was a prolific painter of portraits, subject pictures and occasional landscapes. He was regarded as one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. Born in London, January 1850, the younger son of the judge Robert Collier (First Lord Monkswell). He studied art under Poynter at the Slade School, in Paris under J.-P. Laurens, and in Munich; encouraged by Alma-Tadema and Millais. John Collier exhibited at the R.A. 1874–1934 and at the Grosvenor Gallery and New Gallery. He died in Hampstead, London, April 1934.

Sixteen of John Collier's paintings are now in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London, and two in the Tate Gallery.
