Eighteenth Century Lovers Painting After Schall

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine period painting of two lovers in passionate embrace. The work is in watercolour and gouache and is after the late french rococo artist Jean-Frederick Schall. The painting is mounted in the original frame dating to the late eighteenth century and has the name Schall and date 1783 inscribed at the base. The frame has had some damage and repair and is in good untouched condition. The painting is in excellent condition bright and fresh.

Jean-Frédéric Schall (1752-1825) was born in Strasbourg but studied in Paris at the Académie Royale under the supervision of Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié (1735-1784). He specialised in erotic and pastoral subjects which were later engraved. His style betrays the influence of François Boucher (1703-1770), Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) and Pierre-Antoine Baudouin (1723-1769) as well as Antoine Watteau (1684-1721).

The painting is a period copy of an original oil by Schall, I have been unable to locate the original and possibly it was destroyed. ...
