A dramatic Scottish oil sketch painting by the Victorian artist Samuel J Barnes (Exh. 1882-97). The painting, in oils on board, shows the river at Braemar in Scotland with the dramatic misty mountains rising in the background. The work is signed S.J.Barnes and mounted in a superb period gilt frame in wonderful untouched condition. Barnes was a highly regarded artist in the later Victorian period having exhibited at the Royal Academy and being a member of the Royal Hibernian academy, he often painted near Balmoral and was collected by both Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. The whole is in excellent condition. C.1890
