McTague of Harrogate has dated this piece to the 1900s.
Though he worked chiefly in Yorkshire (Harrogate and Knaresborough) where he spent much of his life, in 1918-19 he returned to West Cornwall to settle at St Ives and Carbis Bay for the final five years of his life, painting across Cornwall up to his death in 1924.
A Memorial Exhibition was held at the Municipal Art Gallery, Plymouth soon after he died, and at the March Show Day in St Ives in 1924 he was reviewed for his "interesting picture of a Fish Sale", a busy group on the slipway near to the Sloop.
"MY WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN" is a charming oil painting on board by Cave Day showing the artist's wife and two children at Coister-on-Sea, Norfolk. It is signed lower left, dated Sept. 1907 lower right and is inscribed by the artist on an old label on the reverse:
"I painted this little sketch portrait group of my wife and two children early Sept. 1907 at Coister-on-sea, Norfolk, and gave it to Kathleen as a birthday gift Nov.7 1907 with love....".
It measures 9"x 6" and is contained in a good quality hand made modern gilt frame.
