Sir J.a. Arnesby Brown "Cattle Study" Oil Painting

Description

Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown was born in Nottingham on 29th March 1866 and died at Haddiscoe, Norfolk on 16th November 1955. He was an important English landscape artist, "one of the leading British landscape artists of the 20th century" and was best known for his impressionistic depictions of pastoral landscapes, often featuring cattle.

Arnesby Brown first studied at the Nottingham School of Art in the late 1880s. He has been called "the artist Nottingham forgot", with little remaining reference to him in Nottingham. He later studied at the Bushey School of Art in Hertfordshire for four years from 1889. After exhibiting at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1890 he became an elected Associate there in 1903 and later exhibited widely at exhibitions throughout the U.K. and abroad. He was knighted in 1938.

"Cattle in a Landscape, a study" is a charming atmospheric oil painting on panel measuring 6"x 9". It is in lovely original unrestored condition and is contained in a good quality original gilt swept frame giving an overall size of 11"x 14". It is signed with the monogram "A...B..." lower left.
