A charming naive oil on oak panel of a Newfoundland Dog having rescued a sailor from sea. The work is in a wonderful naive manner worked on a thick oak panel and mounted in the original dark mahogany frame. The whole is in excellent condition except from the odd knock to the frame. There were a series of famous rescues involving Newfoundland''s in 1828 and one in 1815 involving Napoleon, the painting dates to this period. C.1820.
