A superb mixed media painting of the famous Dryburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders, burial place of Sir Walter Scott. The painting is worked in watercolour, pen and pastel, and shows the abbey ruins in dramatic setting, with a bold use of colour and technique the work has a vibrant feel about it, and a huge sense of atmosphere. James Porteous Wood was a hugely important Scottish designer and painter in the twentieth century he was the chief designer for Asprey''s taking on many commissions for the rich and famous, but his first love was painting, he was the youngest person ever to be elected to the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society at the age of 26, and he painted and exhibited throughout his life, this work was exhibited at the Scottish Watercolour Society, and exhibited C.1950. The work is in pristine condition and newly mounted.
