Arthur Spooner Rba Oil 'Amorous Prawns'

A weird and quirky oil on board still life by renowned nottingham artist Arthur Spooner RBA (1873-1962). The work shows a plate full of cooked prawns on a green background. The work has a label on the reverse with the title: 'Amorous Prawns' and the painting might have been for exhibition. The work is fully signed to the bottom right. The oil is in excellent condition, and is mounted in a superb quality Victorian gilt frame.

Arthur Spooner (1873–1962) was a hugely talented painter from Nottingham. Spooner was born in Nottingham and trained at the Nottingham School of Art (now part of Nottingham Trent University) in the late 19th century. He later taught landscape and figurative painting there in the early 20th century. He exhibited widely, including the Royal Academy, but never had any desire to leave Nottingham.

Arthur Spooner was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists. He painted The Goose Fair, Nottingham in 1926. The painting was sold at Christie's in 2004 for well in excess of £100,000 and is displayed in Nottingham Castle.
