A rough oil sketch of the sea by the highly regard Royal Academician, Jullius Olsson 1864-1942. The work, in oil on board shows a typical coastal scene, worked in haste outdoors. The work is signed JO, which was a name his students used for him. The reverse of the painting retains a label which states:Rough Sketch for a picture by Julius Olsson R.A. given by him to Dorothy Herbert (Mrs E.H.Thorold) when visiting his studio around 1910.The work has come from Marston Hall, originally, which was the home of the Thorold family.The painting retains the original gilt frame and the whole is in excellent condition.Julius Olsson was a renowned marine and landscape painter. Born 1 February 1864 in London, of a Swedish father and an English mother. Studied in London and abroad. Member of the N.E.A.C. 1891. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1890; A.R.A. 1914, R.A. 1920.
