A really fine quality oil sketch, head and shoulders portrait of a Scottish man. The work is in oil on canvas, laid down on board and has the technique and boldness of stroke of a highly acclaimed artist. This sort of sketch was often done as work for larger paintings and as such is not signed and was probably framed and mounted later by an admirer of the artist. The figure can clearly be seen in Scottish dress with tartan cloak over one shoulder. The picture is mounted in the the original plain gilt frame with wide gilt slip. The whole is in excellent condition.
