Superb Untouched Naive Oil 'The Donkey Ride'

An extremely rare untouched naive school, oil on canvas of a family group. The painting shows a pair of children, very probably brothers, dressed in traditional early victorian childrens clothes, all beautifully painted in that slightly stiff naive way. The two brothers are shown out for a ride on their pet donkey, with it's delightful purpose made childs side saddle, the youngest child sitting in the saddle can be seen to have just had his hat blown off by the wind, and it lays tantalisingly in front of the donkey. The setting is the rolling English landscape probably that owned by the boy's father, in the background can be seen what looks like a ruin abbey, perhaps one of the famous ones of Yorkshire. The whole painting absolutely oozes charm, with the donkey and the children, a particular group i have never seen before, and all done in that wonderful provincial style.

The painting is mounted in it's original frame, in untouched original condition, it has an inner gilded slip with baroque mouldings and the outer frame is oil gilt with baroque shells and scrolls to the corners.

The whole painting, is in what is termed Country house condition, in that it has been hung on the wall when new and not moved, it is covered in 150 years of dirt and knocks and dents, with this article this adds to the charm, it should not be cleaned and polished, it is stable and will not alter if left alone.

The painting, as is often the case with these naive family portraits is not signed, however there is a small label to the rear that reads BW 1848, this is almost certainly the date the painting was created and BW is perhaps the Artist.
