A fine scene in oil on canvas, laid down on board, of the Grand Canal in Venice. The scene is looking across the canal to the church of Santa Maria della Salute. In the forefront can be seen the prows of the gondalas with a beautiful gondola lantern jutting into view. The picture has a vibrant use of colour and loose style that indicates to me that it is typical of the late nineteenth century painting in this country done in an impressionist style. The work is unsigned and being laid down on board indicates that it may well have been done on a painting tour and remained unsigned at that point. The picture is framed in the original frame a carved arts and crafts style oak affair decorated with leaves with a hint of gilding. The whole is a beautiful work of a striking subject, which while unsigned stands as a charming painting in it''s own right.
