Description

Francis Nicholson was born in Pickering, Yorkshire in 1753.

"THE DROPPING WELL AT KNARESBOROUGH," is a very high quality watercolour by Nicholson. It is inscribed on an old label on the reverse and is dated 1792. It measures 11"x 16."

Nicholson studied under Thomas Beckwith and taught drawing. He is regarded as the father of watercolour painting and was a founder of the watercolour society.

This is a superb example of the artist's work, the colours remaining very fresh, and is one of the finest local watercolours we have offered.
