Pair Oil Paintings by Georg Hom 1838-1911

A superb quality pair of oil paintings by the German artist Georg Hom. The first depicts a chambermaid holding a candle aloft as she walks in the dark, the second shows a elderly gentlemen on a darkened street lighting a pipe. The paintings are both in untouched condition and are painted directly on to wooden panels, and given a simple frame by a chamfered edge to the wood which is gilded. The works are both incredibly detailed and finely painted portraits but they are really studies in light effects, which was an area of particular interest for the artist, he worked in fine layers of glazes to gain light and warmth and it is important to not try to clean or restore the works to retain these glazes which are easily removed. The works are signed G Hom and also initialled I.S the meaning of which I have been unable to decifer, the condition is good but being on wood they have been knocked slightly over the years.

Georg Hom was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1838. He studied at the Staedelisch Institute under Jakob Becker (1853-1864), and was active in Frankfurt and from 1876 in Berlin, where he made notable works on Berlin porcelain plaques. G.Hom was very popular as a portraitist and genre painter, and was especially noted for his paintings with candlelight effects. He regularly exhibited at annual shows in Frankfurt, Berlin, and Munich.

This pair of paintings are very rare works by a superb artist whose attention to detail and effect must have rendered his output very low. I can find few examples of his work mostly held in museums in Germany. This is a pair of truly stunning pictures.
