Description

Superb Pair Huge Tudor-Style Oil Portrait Paintings After Cornelis van der Voort

Brief Description:

This is a magnificent and exceptionally large matching pair of mid-20th-century Oil on Canvas Portrait Paintings, believed to be after works by the celebrated Dutch portrait artist Cornelis van der Voort (1576–1624).

These impressive full-length portraits depict the distinguished early 17th-century Dutch aristocratic couple Adriaen de Kies van Wiessen and Justina van Teylingen, both dressed in elaborate Jacobean-period attire.

The gentleman stands confidently upon a chequered stone floor, wearing a richly embroidered dark green-black doublet, fashionable breeches, delicate lace cuffs and an imposing white pleated ruff collar. He holds a pair of gloves, with a finely detailed heraldic coat of arms appearing above.

His female companion is equally splendid, wearing an exquisite dark green gown with elaborate gold embroidery, decorative chains, delicate lacework and a magnificent white ruff collar. A corresponding heraldic coat of arms appears in the background.

Together, the paintings beautifully capture the grandeur, wealth and aristocratic elegance of early 17th-century European portraiture, with particularly attractive attention to the sitters' facial features, sumptuous costumes and intricate detailing.

Both paintings are presented within matching black moulded frames with gilt inner detailing, creating a wonderfully imposing and harmonious pair.

An exceptionally decorative and striking pair of portraits that would make a magnificent statement displayed together in a grand hallway, country house, period residence, library or traditional interior.

Tudor and 17th-century Dutch portraiture typically features formal full-length or half-length poses, sober dark garments contrasting with intricate lace or pleated ruff collars, and symbolic coats of arms.

Artists traditionally used oil pigments bound with linseed oil on hand-woven linen canvas or wood panels, framed in painted timber moldings with subtle gilt highlights.

Authentic period paintings show age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint surface, traditional hand-carved stretcher bar construction, and natural pigment oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas.

A pair of large oil portraits creates a strong focal point when hung symmetrically above a dining room sideboard, lining a grand staircase wall, or styled in a home library.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct heat and sunlight, dusted lightly with a soft dry brush, and cleaned exclusively by a qualified art conservator.
