Victorian Joseph Holdcroft Majolica Set of Three Bear Syrup Jugs, C.1875

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A rare and complete antique Victorian graduated set of three majolica novelty syrup jugs, modelled as bears and produced by the English potter Joseph Holdcroft in Longton, Staffordshire, England, circa 1875.

The set comprises the small, medium and large versions of Holdcroft's celebrated bear model. Each seated brown bear holds a large ladle forming the rim and neck of the jug; a separate honey-dipping spoon, hooked to the reverse, forms the lifting handle, and the open mouth serves as the pouring spout. The expressive faces, paws and textured fur are modelled with striking naturalism.

All three jugs retain vibrant pink majolica interiors, and each unglazed base bears the deeply impressed LILI cipher. Complete graduated sets of all three sizes are rare, particularly with every tooth intact.

Dimensions: Large jug: height 34 cm, width 16 cm, depth 23 cm, weight 2290 g. Medium jug: height 29 cm, width 13 cm, depth 19 cm, weight 1700 g. Small jug: height 21.5 cm, width 10 cm, depth 14.5 cm, weight 767 g.

Condition: All three jugs are in excellent antique condition and have been examined under UV light. All teeth are intact.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be carefully packed and shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Victorian majolica is a type of earthenware ceramics introduced in the mid-19th century, characterised by relief-moulded designs and colourful lead glazes fired over a terracotta body.

Pieces were slip-cast or moulded using low-fired earthenware, then coated with semi-translucent coloured lead glazes such as cobalt blue, deep brown, green, and pale pink.

Authentic pieces frequently display British diamond registration marks or manufacturer stamps, crisp moulding details, natural glaze crazing, and unglazed firing foot rims.

Majolica ceramics function as conversation pieces when displayed in groups on a sideboard top, curated inside glass cabinets, or arranged along a fireplace mantelpiece.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding submersion for prolonged periods, extreme thermal changes, and abrasive scrubbers that may damage the glaze.
