FAQs

A lowboy is a small table with drawers, typically featuring cabriole legs and a shaped apron, originating in the 18th century during the William and Mary and Georgian periods. Originally designed as a dressing table or side table, it served as a functional companion piece to the taller chest-on-chest or highboy.

Georgian lowboys were predominantly constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Traditional construction features include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid plank tops, hand-carved cabriole legs ending in pad feet, and cast brass swan-neck drawer handles.

Authentic Georgian oak lowboys display signs of hand craftsmanship, including irregular drawer dovetails, hand-planed timber surfaces, and natural wood shrinkage across wide top planks. Original pieces showcase authentic patination, historic wear around the feet, and cast brass hardware mounts on the drawer fronts.

An antique oak lowboy functions effectively as a console table in an entryway, a side table in a hallway, or a dressing table in a bedroom. Complementing the warm wood tones with simple ceramics, a decorative mirror overhead, or contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic and modern elements.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, and uneven fading.
