Description

A very fine Derby Porcelain Porter Mug c.1805-10 Duesbury & Kean period. Of cylindrical shape with an angular handle, the main body, finely painted in coloured enamels with a neoclassical pattern incorporating birds, mythical beasts in gold with chasing to heighten the gilt decoration. Around the rim is a wide band with an orange ground along with some more classically inspired gold decoration. 

Marked with a purple crown over crossed batons and letter D to the base. Gilders / Decorators mark 40

Condition: Very small rim chip and a small amount of wear to the gilding. 

Porter is a style of beer that was developed in London in the early 18th century. It is well-hopped and dark in appearance owing to the use of brown malt

This Regency period Derby porcelain porter mug dates from circa 1805 to 1810 during the Duesbury and Kean period. The cylindrical body stands on a white glazed base with orange, white, and gold colouring, accented by hand-painted polychrome enamel birds and mythical beasts in gold with chased gilt decoration. An orange band encircles the upper rim with classical gold patterns, complemented by an angular handle with gold trim, a stippled blue and white dotted panel beneath the central motif, and a very small rim chip with minor wear to the gilding. The mug measures 13 cm high and 12.5 cm wide. Suitable for display on a bookshelf, this decorative porcelain piece adds traditional Regency character to an interior setting.
