Brief Description:
This is a delightful original antique etching by the celebrated British sporting and animal artist Samuel Howitt (1756–1822), depicting a wonderfully observed group of pigs within a rustic farmyard, accompanied by a cockerel and hen perched upon the timber fencing above.
he composition is beautifully executed, with Howitt's characteristic attention to animal anatomy and character particularly evident in the individually portrayed pigs. The surrounding straw, feeding trough, timber fencing, farm buildings and poultry are rendered through remarkably intricate engraved line and cross-hatching, creating considerable depth and texture.
Inscribed within the plate at the lower left “Howitt inv. et f.”, identifying Samuel Howitt as both the designer and maker of the image, and numbered “50” at the upper left.
Samuel Howitt was one of the foremost British animal and sporting artists of the late Georgian period and became particularly admired for his depictions of horses, dogs, livestock, hunting scenes and exotic animals. His graphic works remain highly collectable for their combination of naturalistic observation and considerable technical skill.
The etching has been very attractively presented beneath glass with an elaborate multi-layered conservation-style mount, including hand-lined and marbled decorative borders, and housed within an elegant black and gilt frame.

The work presents extremely well for its age, retaining excellent definition and clarity throughout the finely engraved detail. There is some light age-related toning, occasional minor spotting and small marks to the paper, entirely commensurate with an antique work on paper of this period.
