Chinese Carved Carnelian Agate Fantail Goldfish on Fitted Hardwood Stand, c.1930–1940

A particularly attractive early 20th-century Chinese hand-carved carnelian agate figure of a fancy goldfish, probably dating to the Republic period, circa 1930–1940.

Carved from richly coloured translucent orange-red carnelian/chalcedony, the stone displays attractive natural tonal variation ranging from deep reddish-orange through warm amber and honey tones, particularly striking when illuminated.

The fish is dramatically modelled with prominent eyes, incised scale decoration and an exceptionally large flowing fantail. The tail and fins have been worked comparatively thinly and finely engraved with numerous radiating lines to suggest individual fin rays. The carving has considerable movement when viewed from the side and above.

Of particular interest is the darker natural area of the stone around the head, demonstrating the carver’s use of the colour variations and inclusions within the original material.

Presented on its fitted dark carved hardwood display stand, individually recessed to accommodate the body and fins of the fish.

Fish imagery has a long tradition in Chinese decorative arts and hardstone carving. Carnelian and agate were particularly effective materials for such subjects because their translucency and natural colour variations could be incorporated into the composition.

Condition: The carving displays well but has age-related damage which has been fully taken into account in the price. There are small chips/losses to the thin upper extremities of the large tail/fin and damage/loss to a lower fin extremity. Various fissures/fracture lines are visible within the stone, some likely natural to the material and others possibly associated with historic damage. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
