An antique silhouette portrait is a profile image of a person or scene created as a solid shape of a single colour, typically black, set against a lighter background. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these portraits were executed using cut paper, india ink, or watercolour prior to the widespread adoption of photography.

19th-century silhouettes were commonly executed using cut black paper mounted onto woven paper or painted with black watercolour and india ink. Accent details were often highlighted with bronze paint or gilded ink, and the completed artwork was typically set in rosewood, maple, or plaster-gilt frames.

Authentic silhouettes from this period exhibit natural paper aging, such as foxing, toning, or mild discolouration around the edges. Examining the brushwork or cut edges under magnification often reveals minor hand-crafted irregularities or fine gilded detailing characteristic of period artisans.

Antique silhouettes can be displayed individually on a narrow wall space or arranged in a gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings and monochrome photography. Hanging them above a mantelpiece or console table adds historical context to minimalist or traditional interior schemes.

Preserve an antique silhouette by hanging it away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper degradation. Ensure the artwork is kept behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting, and clean the frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
