Pith paper paintings originated in southern China, particularly Canton, during the late 18th and 19th centuries as popular export items for Western travelers and merchants. These works depicted Chinese culture, trades, flora, and fauna, serving as visual souvenirs before the advent of photography.

Pith paper is sliced thinly from the cellular core of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant rather than manufactured like traditional paper. Artists used opaque gouache and watercolour pigments, which absorbed into the textured pith to create a luminous, velvety appearance.

Authentic period pieces exhibit a distinct velvety surface texture with slight translucent qualities under lighting. Due to the brittle nature of the dried plant pith, original works frequently show hairline fractures or slight perimeter loss along the edges.

A framed pith paper artwork on a stand is suitable for display on a console table, sideboard, or deep mantelpiece. It functions as a decorative focal point alongside neutral ceramics, contemporary table lamps, or structured wooden furniture.

Pith paper is sensitive to humidity changes and direct ultraviolet light, which can cause the material to darken or fracture. Preserve these artworks by displaying them behind UV-protective glass away from direct sunlight and moisture sources.
