19th Century Devotional Oil on Canvas - Circle of Jozef Jansessens

19th century
Description

Fine 19th century Flemish School or Nazarene revival style religious oil painted by an artist in the circle of Jozef Janssens (1854 - 1930)

It depicts a scene from the Stations of the Cross, specifically representing Jesus falling under the weight of the cross on his way to Calvary. It aligns with traditional passion imagery, specifically referencing either the First, Second, or Third Fall of Christ along the Via Dolorosa.

The artist has skilfully rendered this work in a style very much characteristic of late 19th-century contemplative European works. It is highly detailed and features multiple brightly dressed figures in historical costume (which range from Roman-style armour to Renaissance-era attire) they surround Jesus, who lies prostrate in a white tunic.

Measures: 100cm x 75cm x 2cm

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, religious artwork experienced a major resurgence influenced by Gothic Revival and Nazarene movements, focusing on historicism, clear narrative structure, and medieval stylistic references.

Artists typically employed oil-based pigments bound with linseed or walnut oil on hand-stretched flax canvas, finished with natural resin varnishes such as mastic or dammar.

Authentic works from this period usually feature age-related craquelure, oxidised timber stretcher frames, period-appropriate hand-woven canvas textures, and natural age darkening of the varnish.

A large narrative canvas functions effectively as a focal point when positioned above a sideboard or mounted on a muted, limewashed wall to balance historical detail with simple modern architectural lines.

Position the canvas away from direct heat sources and sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels, and dust gently using a soft, dry brush without chemical solvents or water.
