Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century, pastel portraiture gained popularity across Europe as a medium offering luminous colour and soft texture without the long drying times of oil paint. Artists applied dry pigment directly onto paper, capturing intimate likenesses and fashion details of the Georgian era.

These works were created using dry pigment sticks bound with small amounts of gum, applied to paper mounted on canvas or board. They were protected under glass within hand-carved or moulded giltwood frames to prevent pigment smudging and atmospheric degradation.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-accurate attire and hairstyles, subtle foxing or paper discoloration, and original hand-blown glass with minor imperfections. The reverse typically shows period wooden backing boards, hand-forged tacks, and historic framing seals.

A pair of oval portraits creates balance when hung symmetrically above a sideboard, flanking a mantelpiece, or positioned within a narrow hallway space. They provide historical context when contrasted against contemporary furnishings or modern colour schemes.

Display pastel works away from direct sunlight, strong artificial light, and areas with fluctuating humidity. Ensure the original glass framing remains tightly sealed to protect the unvarnished pigment from dust, and avoid touching the paper surface directly.
