Night Seascape Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

A very interesting and capable oil on panel depicting a boat on the sea at night. The work is very beautifully handled in the French Impressionist manner using thick oil paint applied quickly by brush and palette knife. It is extremely difficult to paint the night and hear it is done superbly. The light of the moon has changed the colour of night to shades of sepia, moonlit highlights are in white and all colour is drained except the artificial green light aboard the ship. The technique used also allows the base texture of the wooden board to show through in places as part of the work, for example the town on the shoreline in the distance. It is all very cleverly done. The painting is in good condition with the odd very minor piece of touching in. The work is signed to the lower right however it is illegible, I would expect it to be by a French artist of high regard. The frame is the original, has a silvered gold finish which works very well with the painting. The whole is an interesting and decorative piece. C.1920.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nocturnal seascape is a genre of marine painting that depicts maritime scenes, coastal views, or vessels at sea during night-time, often highlighting the interplay of moonlight, cloud formations, and water reflections.

Traditional oil seascapes were rendered using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen canvas, hemp, or wooden panels, and were typically housed in moulded wood or gilded plaster frames.

Authentic period pieces often display natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the frame, original stretcher bars, and evidence of hand-applied impasto techniques characteristic of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century artists.

Integrate the painting as a focal point above a sideboard or mantelpiece, pairing the dark palette with muted wall colours, brass lighting fixtures, or rich timber furniture to complement its tonal depth.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent paint cracking or canvas warping. Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
