Original British Impasto Oil Painting Rocky Coastal Seascape Indistinctly Signed

1900 - 1920
Description

Description: An atmospheric original oil painting depicting a rough rocky coastline with waves breaking across the foreground beneath a dramatic overcast sky. Painted with particularly rich, heavily worked impasto throughout, especially to the breaking surf and cloud formations, giving the work a strong sense of movement and texture.

Signed indistinctly lower right, appearing possibly to read Naysmith / Nasmith, although we have been unable to identify the artist with certainty and therefore offer the work as British School, signed indistinctly.

Medium: Oil on board/canvas board

Subject: Rocky coastal seascape

Date: Probably early 20th century

Signature: Indistinctly signed lower right

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Framed, as shown Important notice regarding frames – please read carefully.

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request.

Condition: Painting appears in generally good vintage condition with age-related surface characteristics. Frame has light marks and wear consistent with age. Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British impasto seascapes utilise thick, textured paint application, often applied with a palette knife or heavy brushwork, to capture the dramatic coastlines and changing weather of the British Isles.

Traditional marine oil paintings are created using linseed oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen canvas, heavy wood panels, or artist board.

Authentic period oil paintings show natural surface cracking known as craquelure, age-appropriate darkening or oxidisation of the varnish layer, and physical paint build-up along brushstrokes rather than printed synthetic texture.

A coastal oil painting can be styled above a console table or mantelpiece in a neutral room, providing textured visual interest without overwhelming surrounding modern furnishings.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting the surface gently with a dry, soft camel hair brush without applying moisture or chemical liquid cleaners.
