Two and Antique Sanguine on Paper Drawings ( Childs Head/draped Figure)

18th century
Description

1 x ITALIAN OLD MASTER HEAD STUDY OF A YOUNG CHILD  - SANGUINE DRAWING ON PAPER

Fine 18th century Italian sanguine drawing 'Head Study of a Young Child'

Executed by a supremely talented hand, with fine crosshatched strokes.

Bears later inscription.

Ready to hang in an  antique glazed wooden frame with gilt highlights.

Sheet measures: 30 x 24cm / 12 x 9.5 in

1 x FRENCH OLD MASTER DRAWING OF A DRAPED FIGURE

This drawing is typical of the French Academic style championed by Charles Le Brun and his contemporaries during the reign of King Louis XIV. [1, 2]

The piece displays the key characteristics of the mid-to-late 17th century Baroque period:

Red chalk on paper was heavily favored during this period for preparatory studies because its soft texture allowed masters to realistically capture the deep contours, heavy folds, and organic flow of drapery.

The focus on monumental, deeply undulating robes with complex fabric volume is an essential feature of classical history painting composition. The underlying physical posture remains defined and anatomically correct beneath the heavy cloak.

The dramatic half-turned stance and extended arm pointing outward indicate this is a character study created to serve a narrative purpose in a larger biblical, mythological, or allegorical historical mural.

Both drawings in antique frames

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sanguine drawings are works created using a natural reddish-brown chalk composed of iron oxide, a medium favoured by artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century for academic figure and portrait studies.

These artworks were typically rendered using natural red chalk or hematite sticks onto handmade rag paper, often presented within gilt or ebonised wooden frames behind glass.

Authentic antique red chalk drawings exhibit natural oxidation of the paper, subtle variations in chalk density, soft blending technique, and physical signs of aging on the rag paper substrate.

Pair antique sanguine drawings with neutral backdrops, dark wood panelling, or gallery walls to add historic character and artistic depth to living rooms, studies, or hallways.

Display chalk drawings away from direct sunlight and humidity, using UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials to prevent fading and foxing of the delicate paper.
