Renaissance Bench or Settle

16th century
Description

A Renaissance period bench in walnut with a wonderful sun bleached patina. The folding back has two carved roundels with portraits of a gentleman and lady, likely husband and wife either side of an inlaid cross to bless the marriage. The iron hinges and stretchers appear to be original and in good working order. The legs have a restrained moulded decoration and the whole piece has a feeling of quiet dignity. It is a nice smaller size which adds to its beauty.

Inevitably from this early period and being of walnut there is some old worm damage, this is long dead but has been treated for good measure, otherwise the piece is in remarkably good order.

Spanish. Circa 1570

Height 78 cm ( 40 1/2”)

Width 115 cm (22 1/2”)

Depth 38cm (176 1/2’)

Seat height 43cm (17”)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Renaissance benches typically feature low-relief carvings, geometric proportions, human profile medallion roundels, and sturdy architectural silhouettes popular across sixteenth and seventeenth-century Europe.

These benches were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut, using mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-forged iron stretchers, and relief-carved decorative panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-hewn timber, irregular saw marks, wooden peg joinery, hand-forged iron fittings with natural oxidisation, and age-appropriate wear patterns on contact areas.

Positioning a wooden bench in an entryway, hallway, or along a dining table creates strong textural contrast against contemporary smooth plaster walls and minimal architectural lines.

Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and an occasional light application of high-grade beeswax paste will preserve the timber, while maintaining a stable humidity level protects against wood movement.
