Pair of Antique Edwardian Marine Oil Paintings — Sunrise & Sunset, Signed B. Nash, 1904

1900 - 1920
Description

A pair of Edwardian oil paintings of sunrise and sunset over water, with sailing vessels.

On canvas, English School, each signed and dated "B. Nash, 1904" to the lower corner.

The pair functions as a thematic diptych representing two contrasting times of day over a coastal harbor or estuary: one depicts sunrise, the other sunset, both showing sailing boats at anchor on open water beneath a coloured sky.

The execution relies on soft, atmospheric brushwork and an impressionistic focus characteristic of British regional or amateur coastal painters from the early Edwardian era.

The paintings remain on their original stretchers with original tacking. Both show fine craquelure consistent with age, and a few small areas of surface wear. Reflecting their genuine 1904 age, one canvas shows two tiny, historic pin-size holes, which are entirely stable and do not detract from the overall image.

The frames are the original mahogany-finish mouldings with cosmetic wear. Although antique and original, they add a surprisingly contemporary look to this appealing, narrow rectangular pair of landscapes.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian marine paintings produced between 1901 and 1910 focus on atmospheric light, harbour scenes, and coastal shipping. Artists of this era often captured transitional times of day, such as sunrise and sunset, using loose brushwork influenced by late 19th-century Impressionism.

Paintings from this period were typically executed in oil paint on stretched linen canvas or wooden panel. They were generally finished with a protective varnish and housed in dark stained oak, mahogany, or gilded wood frames.

Authentic paintings display natural craquelure across the paint surface, age-appropriate darkening of the canvas backing, and consistent wear to the frame. Original artist signatures and dates inscribed into wet paint provide further verification of period provenance.

A pair of horizontal seascapes works well hung vertically aligned in a narrow wall space or placed symmetrically above a console table or sideboard. The warm ochre hues contrast nicely with contemporary neutral walls or dark painted panelling.

Display oil paintings away from direct sunlight, radiators, and humid environments to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the surface gently using a clean, soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths.
