WILLIAM ETTY. The first significant British painter of nudes, who famously produced numerous female life studies at the Royal Academy which was close to his home in Buckingham Street. In some cases, these subjects were worked into a biblical or mythological narrative.

Albeit extremely talented, Etty was shy and had a very limited social life. In a typical day he woke at 7 am, painting from around 9 or 10 am until 4 pm, after which he had a meal. Following the meal, he took a walk, and attended life classes between 6 and 8 pm. On returning home he drank two cups of tea, and went to bed at midnight.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century academic figure studies focus on anatomical precision, classical proportion, and masterful rendering of light and shadow. Artists typically produced these works as life studies using charcoal, chalk, or graphite on toned paper.

Artists during the Georgian and Victorian eras commonly used white and black chalk, pastel, charcoal, or graphite wash applied to hand-moulded paper or mid-toned paper to capture form and contrast efficiently.

Authenticity is assessed through paper age, watermarks, light degradation, pencil and chalk application, artist monograms, and documented provenance or auction records.

A framed antique study integrates well into a gallery wall or displayed above a sideboard paired with minimalist ceramics to contrast historical mark-making with modern elements.

Works on paper must be framed using acid-free mounting materials and UV-protective glass, while maintaining a stable environment away from direct sunlight and humidity.
