“Paolo & Francesca – Dante”

Pre-Raphaelite Interest

The subject of Paolo and Francesca was particularly important to Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882), who produced a number of drawings and watercolours inspired by the lovers.

Rossetti experimented with the composition over a number of years. Recorded preparatory works include pencil studies and a sheet containing four studies executed in pencil, pen and wash on grey paper.

Rossetti's friend, the sculptor Alexander Munro (1825–1871), was simultaneously developing his own interpretation of Paolo and Francesca. Rossetti presented several of his drawings of the subject to Munro.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pre-Raphaelite and 19th-century works on paper often draw inspiration from classical mythology, medieval literature, and Dantes poetry. Ink and wash techniques utilize diluted monochrome or subtle watercolour pigments to create fluid contours, tonal depth, and atmospheric narrative scenes.

Artists during this period typically employed hand-laid rag paper, iron gall or Indian ink, and natural mineral or botanical watercolour pigments. Sketches were executed using dip pens, fine hair brushes, and layered washes of diluted ink.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic signs of age, such as natural paper discolouration, foxing, or oxidisation around ink lines. Physical inspection often reveals laid lines or watermarks inherent to period paper production, alongside evidence of historic mounting techniques.

A 19th-century sketch can be framed in a simple dark wood or gilded frame paired with a neutral, acid-free mount. Positioned within a gallery wall or on a narrow wall space, it offers a sophisticated focal point that complements both traditional schemes and contemporary minimalist settings.

Works on paper should be kept away from direct sunlight and displayed under UV-protective conservation glass. Maintain a stable indoor environment with controlled humidity levels to prevent paper warping, mould growth, or pigment fading.
