Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A William IV mahogany torchere is a tall, slender wooden stand produced in Britain between 1830 and 1837. Designed originally to hold candlesticks or lamps, these stands typically feature turned, reeded shafts and tripod bases characteristic of the late Georgian and William IV design transition.

19th-century torcheres were predominantly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany. Key construction methods include hand-lathe turned columns, hand-carved reeding or fluting, and dovetail or lap joints securing the tripod legs to the central base block.

Authentic pieces feature signs of historical hand-tooling, such as slight irregularities in the hand-carved reeding and turned collars. Look for dark timber patination, natural shrinkage along the wood grain, hand-cut joinery on the leg attachments, and original weight distribution.

A torchere functions effectively as an accent pedestal in an unused corner, hallway, or alcove. Modern interior schemes often use them to elevate indoor houseplants, classic bust sculptures, or decorative ceramic vases to add vertical interest.

Solid mahogany should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with high-quality beeswax to nourish the timber. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and uneven fading.
