Burr Elm Lowboy, George II Period, Circa 1750

18th century
Description

Rare George II Burr Elm Lowboy, Circa 1750

A rare and beautiful piece of George II English furniture, this fine lowboy is veneered throughout in richly figured burr elm, displaying exceptional grain, colour and character.

The lowboy stands on elegant cabriole legs terminating in pointed pad feet. The front is fitted with three drawers, comprising a full width upper drawer over two shorter drawers, all beautifully veneered in finely figured burr elm and enhanced with delicate fruitwood stringing. Each drawer retains its original lock and handles, while the drawers themselves retain their original pine linings, which remain in good condition.

The beautifully figured top is veneered in matching burr elm with complementary fruitwood stringing and is finished with a simple quadrant moulding around the edge. The sides and legs appear to be constructed from solid walnut, providing a pleasing contrast to the richly figured elm veneers.

The lowboy remains in very good original condition and has acquired a wonderful rich colour and attractive age related patina. A particularly fine and authentic example of mid 18th century English furniture, with excellent decorative appeal and unusually well preserved original features.

English, circa 1750

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is an 18th-century table fitted with drawers, originating in the Queen Anne and Georgian eras to serve as a dressing table or side server. During the George II period, these pieces were constructed with cabriole legs, shaped aprons, and timber veneers such as burr elm or walnut.

Georgian lowboys were crafted from hardwoods including oak, walnut, mahogany, and burr elm. Construction techniques featured hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, hand-cast brass handles, and veneered tops with feather banding or crossbanding.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display physical markers of hand-craftsmanship, including irregular dovetail joints, hand-planed backboards, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Period brassware exhibits hand-casting marks and surface oxidisation, while drawer bottoms often show oak or pine secondary timber.

An antique lowboy functions as an entryway console table, a bedside table, or a focal accent piece in a modern living room. Combining warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, ceramic lamps, or modern sculpture creates visual contrast.

Maintain the original surface patina by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year. Position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, veneer lifting, or fading.
