George III Oak Lowboy

18th century
Description

A late 18th century George III oak lowboy dating to around 1780, of elegant proportions and retaining an attractive original configuration of two short drawers over a full-width long drawer.

The rectangular top displays a beautifully figured oak grain, sitting above three oak-lined drawers constructed with finely hand-cut dovetail joints. The drawers retain their original brass swan neck handles and decorative escutcheons.

Raised on four square tapering legs united to the drawer section with attractive shaped corner brackets, this is a well-balanced and refined example of a classic Georgian lowboy. The clean lines and practical size make it an ideal hall table, side table, lamp table or occasional piece in both period and contemporary interiors.

Presented in good antique condition with a rich mellow patina and the expected age-related marks and wear consistent with over 240 years of use. The drawers run well and the table is solid and ready for everyday use.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small table fitted with drawers, originally popularised in 18th-century England and America as a dressing table or side table. During the George III period, these pieces were typically constructed from local hardwoods such as oak or mahogany and featured straight or cabriole legs.

Georgian lowboys were traditionally crafted using hand-joined solid timber, often featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints and oak drawer linings. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass drop handles, brass keyhole escutcheons, and hand-cut iron fasteners.

Authentic George III lowboys exhibit age-appropriate signs of wear, such as hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, irregular surfaces from hand-planing, and original brass fittings with natural oxidisation. The underside of the top panel and drawer bottoms often show saw marks characteristic of 18th-century timber conversion.

An antique oak lowboy functions effectively as an entrance hall table, a compact desk in a home office, or an occasional side table in a living room. Combining the deep patina of aged oak with clean-lined contemporary ceramics or modern artwork creates a balanced interior design contrast.

Maintain an antique oak lowboy by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece positioned away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping or cracking.
