Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian claret jug is a vessel specifically designed during the nineteenth century for serving red Bordeaux wine, historically referred to as claret in Britain. These jugs combine a blown or cut glass body with precious metal mounts, such as sterling silver or silver gilt, featuring an integrated handle, spout, and hinged lid.

These vessels feature a lead glass body that is often wheel-engraved or etched with decorative motifs, paired with sterling silver elements coated in a layer of gold, known as silver gilt or vermeil. The metal section encompasses the collar, spout, lid, foot, and handle, secured to the glass structure using internal pins or cement.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps on the metal collar or rim, indicating the silver purity mark, assay office symbol, date letter, and makers mark. Genuine nineteenth-century examples display period-appropriate techniques, including fine wheel-engraved patterns and cast metal detailing.

Place the jug on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or within a glass display cabinet to highlight the reflective metallic surface and glass detailing. It functions as a decorative accent when positioned alongside modern glassware or curated barware collections.

Hand wash the glass interior using tepid water and mild liquid soap, avoiding sudden water temperature changes that could thermal shock the glass. Wipe the exterior silver gilt carefully with a soft cotton cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that could wear away the gold surface over time.
