A FINE 18TH CENTURY BRITISH SCHOOL OIL PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN WEARING A TRICORN HAT, WITH PIPE & BOWL.
A highly attractive and intriguing 18th century oil on canvas depicting a finely dressed gentleman seated within an interior setting, wearing a tricorn hat and blue coat.
The sitter is shown holding a long white clay pipe, seated before a collection of coins and a blue and white porcelain bowl, suggesting themes of commerce, collecting or mercantile success. The portrait possesses considerable character and atmosphere and is painted with notable skill, particularly in the treatment of the face, costume and still-life elements.
The painting appears to date from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, circa 1765–1785, and retains a substantial period character. An additional fragmentary historic label survives to the stretcher, although unfortunately the inscription is incomplete.
The painting is housed within an impressive and highly decorative gilt frame, which compl
...ements the work beautifully.
This is a fascinating example of an eighteenth-century British portrait or genre study and would make an excellent addition to any collection of Georgian portraiture, British art or historic interiors.
