Early 20th C. Pastel Portrait by Artist Laura E. Hope

1900 - 1920
Description

This very angelic and appealing portrait of a young Victorian girl was done by British artist and illustrator Laura E. Hope.

Born Laura Elizabeth Rachel Troubridge (also known as Laura Troubridge or Mrs. Adrian C. Hope), she was a well-known professional artist from an aristocratic background. She was a highly regarded watercolour and pastel artist who painted in London, encouraged by John Millais. Famous for her portraits of Queen Victoria and the royal family. She also painted children, fairy subjects, and illustrated books that were admired by figures like Oscar Wilde.

The portrait depicts a lovely young girl against a scenic backdrop. The pastels generate a very soft and peaceful image, and the detailing is exceptionally well done. This beauty would make an outstanding feature piece in many different rooms in the home, both contemporary and traditional.
