Sold...portrait of a Gentleman C.1685; Attributed to John Kerseboom

Description

Oil on canvas in 18th century style gilt frame.

The fashionable and expensively dressed sitter looks confidently out of the frame at the viewer.

His high wig (from which fashion came the expression 'big-wig' for someone important), his clothes and particularly his stance, all make this the archetypal Baroque swagger portrait.

The pose and treatment of the material are typical of Kerseboom.

JOHN (JOHANN) KERSEBOOM (working 1680s - 1708) Born in Solingen, the Rhineland; came to England in the 1680s he quickly acquired a large portrait clientele. His patterns derive from Lely and Kneller, but his heads have recognisable individuality. He charged £16 10s for a framed 50 x 40 in 1694.

SIZE: 47.75 x 39.25 inches inc. frame.

PROVENANCE: Warwickshire Private Collection.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
