Large Han Dynasty Grey Pottery Dancer Figure, China, C. 2nd Century Bc
£2,000 $2,680 €2,343
A striking large Chinese grey pottery figure of a female dancer, made in the tradition of Han dynasty mingqi tomb sculpture, probably dating to the Western Han dynasty, around the 2nd century BC. The figure is modelled in a graceful dancing pose, with the body gently curved, one arm raised high and the other lowered forward, creating a strong sense of ritual movement. This type of gesture is closely associated with Han dynasty sleeve dancers, one of the most elegant and recognisable subjects in early Chinese funerary art.
The figure has an impressive sculptural presence, standing 27.5 cm high and weighing 1294 grams. This gives the piece a substantial and serious character, far beyond the effect of a small fragment or minor decorative object. The dense grey earthenware body, surviving pale surface layers, mineral accretions and naturally aged surface structure are all consistent with early Chinese burial pottery. The surface shows areas of pale beige, grey and ochre tone, with an ar...chaeological character that accords well with known museum examples of Han dynasty painted grey pottery figures.
A particularly close museum comparison is the Female Dancer in the Art Institute of Chicago, attributed to China, Western Han dynasty, about the 2nd century BC, made of grey earthenware with slip coating and polychrome pigments. That example preserves more of its original painted surface, while the present figure retains mainly the pale slip, grey ceramic body and archaeological surface. The essential sculptural language is closely comparable: the raised arm, elongated body, quiet stylised face and robe-like lower section.
Such figures were placed in tombs as mingqi, symbolic companions intended to accompany the deceased into the afterlife with music, ceremony and courtly entertainment. Full scientific certainty with ancient pottery can only be provided by thermoluminescence testing. However, on the basis of material, form, surface, pose and comparison with museum examples, the probability of this being a Han dynasty Chinese tomb figure is approximately 90%.
Condition is consistent with ancient archaeological pottery, with surface wear, losses to the original surface layer, rubbing, small chips and age-related accretions. The main sculptural form remains intact, stable and fully legible.
