Large Meiji Period Japanese Satsuma Vase by Hotoda, 1000 Arhats & Dragon

A large and highly decorative Japanese Satsuma vase from the Meiji period, made by the respected Hotoda workshop of Yokohama. Hotoda was one of the leading exporters of high-quality Japanese ceramics during the Meiji period, and the workshop was particularly known for extremely fine facial painting, rich gilding and elaborate hand-decorated surfaces. This is not a small or ordinary cabinet vase, but a substantial and heavy hand-made ceramic work, measuring 37.5 cm high and weighing 2542 grams, with strong visual presence and genuine interior impact.

The subject is the “1000 Arhats”, Buddhist saints and enlightened disciples, shown in a dense continuous composition around the body of the vase, together with a finely painted dragon. The religious character of the decoration is central to the object: the Arhats are not generic figures, but spiritual beings represented with intense, almost theatrical individuality. Each face is carefully painted with powerful eyes, animated brows, teeth, moustaches and strongly modelled features. The quality of the hand painting is far above routine decorative work.

The vase is enriched with raised moriage gilding, black and white dot grounds, stylised waves, brocade-like robes and repeated Buddhist medallions around the neck. The dragon’s head and eyes are especially carefully rendered, adding movement and drama to the composition. The scale, weight and complexity of the design make the vase a striking focal point for a serious interior, gallery display or collection of Japanese Meiji ceramics.

The base bears the Shimazu crest above the gilt mark reading Satsuma Hotoda zo, indicating manufacture by the Hotoda workshop. The vase dates to the Meiji period, circa 1895–1905.

Condition is very good overall. There is restoration and overpainting to the neck/rim area, visible mainly from one side and not disrupting the overall visual composition. The main body, painted figures, dragon, gilding and moriage decoration remain highly attractive and display beautifully.
