Pair of Japanese Satsuma Hexagonal Vases with Rakan and Dragon, Meiji–taisho

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

These two Japanese Satsuma vases form a true pair, matching in size, shape, palette and overall decorative effect, which is an important advantage both visually and commercially. Their strong paired presence makes them far more desirable than two merely related cabinet pieces, and together they create a highly coherent and impressive display.

The decoration is of notably good quality. The figures are individually characterised rather than treated as repetitive stock faces, and the painter has handled the composition with confidence across both bodies. The long dragon is especially striking, and the raised moriage work around it adds texture, relief and visual depth. Rich gilding remains one of the strongest features of the pair, giving the surfaces a warm and luxurious presence that is entirely in keeping with better late Meiji export Satsuma.

These vases belong to the circle of good-quality Satsuma workshops producing refined wares for export in the late Meiji to early Taisho period. They are clearly above ordinary tourist-grade Satsuma in both execution and decorative ambition. The combination of figural painting, dragon imagery, dense gilding and moriage gives them excellent display value and strong decorative appeal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware that originated in Kagoshima prefecture during the late sixteenth century. Recognised by its light ivory crackle glaze, intricate gilding, and detailed polychrome enamelling, it became highly sought after for export during the Meiji and Taisho eras.

Satsuma pieces are crafted from low-fired earthenware clay coated with a finely crackled clear glaze. Artisans apply overglaze enamel pigments and gold paint, often employing techniques such as moriage to create raised relief details.

Authentic pieces feature fine crackle glaze beneath precise overglaze enamelling and heavy gilding, often portraying complex mythological or religious subjects such as Rakan figures. Base markings frequently include painted or incised maker marks or the Shimazu family crest.

These decorative vessels serve as distinctive accents on credenzas, mantelpieces, or side tables within traditional or eclectic rooms. Pairing them with dark timber surfaces or neutral backdrops highlights their gilding and detailed brushwork.

Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or clean microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing the earthenware in water or using liquid detergents, as moisture can absorb into the porous clay through the crackle glaze and harm delicate surface gilding.
