Description

A rare Kyoto Satsuma miniature on three petal-shaped feet, executed in earthenware with overglaze enamels, rich kinrande gold and white enamel details. The frieze shows the full Shichifukujin procession with cranes for longevity; the faces are handled as true portraits with lifelike modelling. A brocade lattice-and-rosette collar at the neck is the classic Kyoto flourish tied to Jissei × Yoshisada within the Choshuzan workshop. Works by this partnership are recorded in museum collections and at major auctions.

Satsuma ware is a Japanese earthenware tradition that originated in Kagoshima prefecture during the late sixteenth century. By the nineteenth century, production expanded to Kyoto and other centres, where artisans developed detailed polychrome enamelling and gilded decoration tailored primarily for Western export.

Satsuma pieces are crafted from a cream-coloured earthenware body finished with a clear glaze that naturally develops a fine crackle pattern. The surface decoration is applied over-glaze using detailed coloured enamels and gold leaf, followed by a secondary low-temperature firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically feature extremely fine, controlled crackle glazing, precise hand-painted enamelling, and painter or workshop marks painted on the base. Later machine-printed reproductions lack the depth, texture, and subtle hand-gilded details found on period examples.

Miniature ceramics serve as focal points when grouped within a glazed cabinet, placed upon a mantelpiece, or layered alongside books on a shelf. Displaying them against neutral backdrops allows the intricate painted brushwork and geometric patterns to stand out.

Due to the porous nature of earthenware and delicate over-glaze enamelling, Satsuma ceramics should never be submerged in water or cleaned with harsh chemicals. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush and handle with clean cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils to the glaze.
