Meiji Japanese Satsuma Cylindrical Vase with Samurai and Court Scenes

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely painted Meiji-period Japanese Satsuma cylindrical vase (c.1885–1900) standing on three small feet and decorated with a continuous 360-degree narrative. The surface is completely covered with figural panels of samurai, court ladies, attendants and festival scenes, framed by brocade borders and geometric ground patterns.

Each face and costume is individually realised, with tiny brushstrokes of enamel and gold.

Historical Background

The warm cream crackled ground and dense gilding are characteristic of higher-quality Meiji export Satsuma. The base carries the blue Shimazu crest above a red-and-gilt “Satsuma-yaki” cartouche, confirming the tradition though leaving the workshop anonymous.

Measurements

• Height 14.8 cm

• Diameter 6 cm

• Weight 281 g

Condition

Displays extremely well.

Expected rubbing to gilding on rim and borders. Two hairline cracks from the rim; one visible inside and out but stable, with no sign of restoration.

Decoration remains vibrant and visually dominant.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of Japan and gained worldwide prominence during the Meiji period (18681912), characterised by cream-coloured crackle-glazed earthenware decorated with polychrome enamels and gilding.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from a low-fired earthenware clay body coated with a translucent, crackled clear glaze, finished with fine hand-painted overglaze enamels and metallic gold gilding.

Authentic Meiji pieces display exceptionally fine hand-painted details, intricate gilding, a uniform micro-crackle glaze, and often bear maker marks or signatures painted on the base in red or gold.

Display a Satsuma vase as a standalone statement piece on a dark wood sideboard or mantelpiece, where its gilded decoration and detailed figural panels can contrast against understated architectural backdrops.

Clean Satsuma ceramics using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or delicate brush, avoiding water immersion and chemical cleaners that can degrade delicate overglaze gilding and enamels.
