Description

Beautifully hand decorated, baluster shape vase. Decorated all around, the main picture is a peacock in a blossoming tree, surrounded by flowers. A stream flows nearby with small birds flying above. The base is signed.

We purchased this vase from a private collector who had bought the vase in Hong Kong around 1930. The vase is older, Meiji 1868 - 1912.

Condition: Excellent.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware ceramics that originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century. It gained widespread international recognition during the Meiji period (18681912), when craftspeople produced elaborately decorated pieces specifically designed for export to Western markets.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from a light beige or ivory earthenware body coated in a clear, finely crackled lead glaze. The surface decoration typically features polychrome enamels combined with extensive liquid gold leaf paint detailing applied over the glaze.

Authentic pieces exhibit a characteristic finely crackled cream glaze, complex polychrome enamelling, and precise hand-painted gilding. Many authentic examples display painted or impressed maker marks on the base, often including the shimazu crest or Japanese character signatures.
