Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of southern Kyushu during the late sixteenth century. Originally a darker, utilitarian earthenware, it evolved during the nineteenth century into decorated export ceramics featuring cream grounds, intricate enamels, and heavy gilding tailored for Western markets.

Satsuma ceramics are created using a low-fired earthenware body covered in a clear, finely crackled glaze. Artisans applied polychrome overglaze enamels, relief gilding, and detailed brushwork to depict historical figures, landscapes, and traditional motifs.
