Pair of Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma Vases with Cobalt and Gold, Meiji Period

Description

A refined pair of Kyoto Satsuma vases by the celebrated Kinkozan workshop, dating to circa 1890–1905. The ovoid bodies are enriched with deep cobalt shoulders and bases decorated with raised gilt maple leaves. One side of each vase shows elegant women and attendants reading and playing music in a garden, painted with characteristic Kinkozan precision. The reverse panels display peonies, bamboo and butterflies on a finely crackled ivory ground.

One base carries the three-character signature ??? (Kinkozan), confirming manufacture by this important Kyoto workshop; the other vase, unsigned, is clearly decorated as its companion.

Condition

One vase remains in excellent condition with no damage or restoration visible under UV. The other has a small rim chip with a discreet professional repair to a short section of the lip, not affecting the cobalt or gilding. Across both vases the gilding on the cobalt—normally prone to wear—survives strongly.

Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma province, Japan, and expanded significantly during the Meiji period (18681912) for export to European and American markets. These ceramics are recognised by their cream-coloured earthenware bodies, fine crackle glazes, and detailed polychrome enamelling accented with gilt highlights.

Satsuma pieces were constructed from a low-fired earthenware clay body covered with a clear lead glaze that forms a subtle crazed surface. Craftsmen decorated the surface using polychrome enamel pigments and applied gold leaf or metallic paint to accent the borders and figurative scenes.

Authentic Meiji items feature tightly controlled hand painting, elaborate enamelling, and rich gilding over a cream crackle glaze. They frequently bear red and gold painter signatures, studio seals, or the Shimazu family crest stamped or painted on the base.
