Description

This is a finely decorated Japanese miniature vase in Satsuma style, notable for its cabinet-scale proportions and unusually dense gilded finish on a pale crackle-glazed body.

The decoration is arranged in framed reserves, including figural scenes of elegantly dressed women and children, set within a refined landscape setting, alongside separate floral panels with seasonal blossoms and foliage.

The surface is richly finished with extensive gilt work, including stippled gilt “gold dust” effects across the ground, with careful line gilding accenting borders, garments, and patterned details.

Material and technique: glazed ceramic with visible crackle (craquelure), overglaze enamels and heavy gilding, executed in a multi-panel composition typical of export decorative wares.

Marks/signature: the base bears a two-character mark ??, transliterated as “Shuzan”. Attributed date: circa 1890.

Context: richly gilt, crackle-ground Satsuma wares are widely collected and appear in major museum holdings and international auction sales, where the best examples are valued for the precision of their painting and the quality of the gilding.
